“If you could go anywhere right this second – – anywhere in the world – – where’d you go?” It’s 2014. Summer. Barbeques are smoking. Warm beer is fizzing. Possibility hangs in the air. For teenagers, Birdy, Owen and Dunk, this summer is going to be the ONE – the summer to end all summers. The plan? Set sail on an old riverboat, cruise down the Thames and break their friend out of boarding school and take him to the World Cup in Brazil – just like they promised. But as the river carries them further from home, they’re forced to confront the truth—not just about their friend, but about themselves and the fragile lines between male friendship, secrecy, and desire. And as the boys drift toward the open sea, the current pulls at everything they’ve tried to hold underwater: what happened to their friend? Why won’t anyone talk about it? And what does it mean to miss someone this much? Brazil is a one-act play about boyhood on the brink, exploring what it means to swim against the current and finally come up for air in a sink or swim world. Through the tender, confused, and chaotic lens of three ordinarily complicated young men, the play questions the illusions we create in order to avoid truth and stay afloat. Harry Daisley is a writer and director for stage, with recent credits including All is Pink in West Berkshire County (Edinburgh Fringe Festival) and Solarium (Stage@Leeds). He is currently a trainee director at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. Running time: 70 minutes (no interval) Age guidance: 14+
