"Thy hand, Belinda…" The Curious Opera Company presents a new, queer interpretation of Purcell's iconic opera. In this adaptation, Belinda – Dido's handmaiden – takes centre stage as she uses her wit and cunning to win the love of her Queen.
In the foreground, Dido – Queen of Carthage – is caught in a battle between choice and duty, as her court urges her to unite with Aeneas to make a picture-perfect royal couple. In a quest to destroy their apparent romance, the sorceress and her witches devise a fool-proof plot but when it is all over, who will be laid in earth?
Taking inspiration from Derek Jarman's creative world, the Curious Opera Company draws absurdity from the traditional and turns the classic tragedy into an unexpected comedy.
Born out of a desire to challenge the traditional landscape and limitations in classical music, the Curious Opera Company aims to give developing professional singers the freedom to work with new narratives and gender-neutral casting to transform opera. Join us as we go through the looking glass…
